Queen of Volts by Amandy Foody | More Like Queen of Wrecking My Heart

Oh. My. Gosh! I’ve been putting off writing this review for way too long. First of all, because I suck at writing reviews – especially when I’m out of practice – and second of all because Queen of Volts has utterly wrecked my heart. Like, my heart actually hurts when I think of how much I both love and hate this book. My love for this series started way back in 2018 when I joined the blog tour, and I can’t believe we’re now at its end! I tried my best doing this book justice with my review… Enjoy!

My Review

Queen of Volts… where do we even begin?! Final books are always scary as they can make or break your entire experience of a series or trilogy, in this case. Ace of Shades totally defied my expectations when I first read it (review here!) and when it comes to Queen of Volts, I had no clue what to expect, other than the fact that it would most definitely be amazing. The story still has everything I loved about the start of the series; incredible characters, beautiful worldbuilding, and an epic plot.

Characters

Enne and Levi are and will always be my all-time favorite characters. They’re opposites in a way. I feel like Enne is almost like an anti-hero; good girl turned really bad. Levi, on the other hand, is trying so hard to make up for past mistakes and be better. No wonder their relationship is so complex! I love them as individuals as well. They’re both strong-minded with their own opinions on what’s good and what’s not, which creates an interesting dynamic. Lola’s storyline broke my heart. First and foremost, because I love her so much and she had to deal with so much, but also because I simply despised some of the choices she made! I think Sophia and even Harvey became my new favorites in the series. I loved reading from their points of view!

World-building

One of my favorite parts of the series is the world-building. Ace of Shades introduced us to the ominous North Side, King of Fools showed us the charming South Side, and Queen of Volts expanded both of them and then some. We saw parts of the city fall, as well as being build. When we look at the pace of the story from a world-building perspective, it’s absolutely perfect. Above all, I didn’t just fall in love with this city, but its rich history and epic legends as well. They play a big part in the plot which makes it all the more interesting.

Plot

Don’t even ask me to summarise Queen Of Volts‘ plot because there’s simply so. much. happening. At the center, there’s this intense sort of magical life-of-death game with twenty-two of the most powerful people in New Reyns, including our main characters. There’s never a dull moment when all your favorite characters’ lives are constantly in danger, hah! I’m so obsessed with this game because it’s such a clever invention! Amanda, if you read this: YOU’RE A GENIUS. I’m not even going to attempt to explain because we’ll be here till tomorrow, no joke. There’s also still so much mystery to be uncovered. And, oh boy, when it does..! Get ready for some shocking plot twists! I swear, most of these things I just didn’t see coming. And yet they made so much sense! And the end? It was so. very. satisfying.

Writing

I am obsessed with Amanda’s writing. Queen of Volts was just as amazingly written as the rest of the Shadow Game trilogy. The pacing was done perfectly, I loved the plot twists and truth bombs and the way each of the narrating characters had their own voice. The story is definitely complex, especially with a game such as the Shadow Game, but I never felt like I couldn’t follow or understand what was going on. There’s a lot of mystery to uncover in this conclusion, but there was no info-dumping or rush to tell all. One thing’s for sure: Amanda knows how to write an epic ending!

My Rating

Saying goodbye to this series is incredibly hard, but I’m delighted about the way it ended! Queen of Volts is the perfect conclusion to the series and I cannot wait to reread these books time and time again.
