Dreaming of my Future Home

I cannot wait to move out of my childhood home. At 24 years old, I just feel like I’m ready! I’ve been dreaming about my future home for years, and I just can’t wait for them to become a reality! I’ve been applying for apartments for over a year now, and I’ve collected quite a few items for what my fellow Dutchies call ‘uitzet’. In today’s post, I’m sharing my hopes, dreams, and ideas for my future home. I’m so excited!

I’m obsessed with home decor. Browsing furniture stores is one of my favorite things to do. I just love buying things for my current home and find inspiration for the future. The same goes for magazines as well. Oh, how I love to flip through magazines with beautifully decorated homes! Sometimes, I just see a piece of furniture in a store and I’m like “That’s what I want for my home!” As if I already have my own place… hahah!

Pinspiration

I fully blame Pinterest for my obsession with home decor and furniture. When I needed a desk for my attic bedroom a few years ago, I found one on Pinterest I absolutely loved. I asked my mom and grandpa if there was any way we could custom build it to fit my room, and we did! I get 99% of my inspiration from Pinterest since then. My Home Board is definitely my favorite. I also have boards such as Kitchens, Coffee (for my future coffee corner!), and my latest: Shelf decor. Home Decor Pins always manage to suck me into the Pinterest voice for hours on end and I love it. I always find something new to be inspired by!

I simply cannot wait to move out of my childhood home. I have so many hopes, dreams and ideas for my future home. I've put them in this post!

The Dream Apartment

My future home has to be an apartment. That’s the only condition I will not be swayed from. It’s not like I can afford a family home anyway, but I need my own place to be small. I’m just one person, I don’t see myself in a relationship and with kids anytime soon ~~or at all…~~ so I simply want a small apartment. Preferably on the second floor or higher and with a balcony. I would just love one so I can still read outside and have some plants, but without the “burden” of a full garden. And how pretty are fairy lights on a balcony railing during the holidays?! Ahh! I’d be happy with a one-bedroom apartment, but an extra room would be lovely for a workspace/home library!

“Uitzet“

I haven’t been able to find an English word that translates the Dutch word “uitzet” properly. Trousseau seems to be the best translation, except it has nothing to do with marriage. It’s just the household items a person collects for their future home when they still live with their parents. Can you even imagine finally getting your own place, only to still have to buy everything you need all at once?! The thought alone horrifies me! Obviously, you can’t buy any kind of big furniture, but there’s plenty of stuff you can buy for your future home! I’m also really lucky to have already lived on my own for a while during college, so I have quite a few necessary items from that time, like a small fridge. I’ll be moving the furniture from my bedroom and workspace as well, which saves me a lot of money.

Kitchen Appliances & Tableware

I’d love to buy the big pieces of furniture like a circular dining table, some comfy chairs and a display cabinet for my tableware, it would be very inconvenient, though. First of all, I have nowhere to store it right now, and second: what if it doesn’t fit in the available space? Instead, I’ve been slowly collecting items for my kitchen. So far I have a pink L’or Barista coffee machine and a lot of Berlinger House products from the Black Rose collection! My favorites are by far my stand mixer and my dish drying rack! Which sounds a bit odd to say… But it’s true! I’ve also been browsing a lot of online stores for tableware like plates, bowls, cups, and glasses. I’ve got this image in my mind of how I want my dining table to look and it’s so exciting to find the things I’m looking for.

Smart Home

My current bedroom has two smart lights from Ikea. They’re connected to WiFi and I can control them through my Apple devices. I consider it to be one of the best inventions ever. You may call me lazy all you like, but I just get a kick out of using my tech. One of my lights actually acts as my wake-up light as well, besides my Apple Watch alarm. It’s a wonderful combo to wake up to! I can’t wait for my future home to have all these cool smart home devices like lights and (hopefully) I’ll be able to get a thermostat that works with a phone as well. And who knows what other kinds of smart home stuff they have in a year or so?

Impatiently Waiting on my Future Home

I’ve been applying for rental apartments for over a year now and I’m getting so terribly impatient! My mom is my favorite person ever and it’s going to be crazy not living with her anymore, but I’m so ready to just move out! I have it all planned out in my head and all I want to do is paint some walls, put down a wooden floor, go furniture shopping, and find the right places for my plants! Let me just throw a Housewarming party and start living my independent life in my own home. I want to have my family over for coffee and I want to cook my own dinner after work. Unfortunately, we’re not quite there yet… But we will be one day!
