Future Plant Princess | Plant Care As A Hobby

Whew, guys! I finally have some time to blog again! Time to get those drafts published and work out all the blog ideas I’ve had floating around my brain for months. I turned – taking care of – plants into a hobby, and I’ve actually acquired quite a bunch of green plant friends over the past few months. It’s an exciting new journey from just having fresh flowers every few weeks to taking care of “permanent” indoor plants and I’d love to share my experiences with you!

I love flowers; over the past few years I’ve always had peonies in my bedroom whenever they were on sale. They’re absolutely my favourite flower and I’m so sad they’re only available for such a short time! Anyway, besides peonies I didn’t really get many other flowers. Then at the start of the pandemic during a really difficult day at work, a customer came in with tulips for everyone working that morning and it absolutely made my day. I’ve been getting new flowers every time old ones die ever since.

Bookshelf Greenery

I was staring at an empty space in my bookshelf when the lightbulb in my head went on and I was like ‘that shelf needs a plant!’ and that probably came from seeing images of (book)shelves with plants like ivy on them. Fast forward a little while later and I got myself an Hedera Helix / English Ivy in a beautiful pink pot. I loved the idea of having this plant fall all the way down my bookshelves! Unfortunately, I killed it… Thankfully I still have a tiny one on my desk which I haven’t killed yet; it’s so cute!

Taking care of plants has become a new hobby over the past year! In this post: my plant care journey full of trail and error!

Try… & Try Again

I felt pretty bumped that I managed to kill the plant so soon, especially since I felt like it was easy to take care of and I actually did take care of it! (Which wasn’t always the case in the past. Man, I killed MANY plants…) My mom thought maybe it was the pot that wasn’t right, or maybe I gave it too much or too little water, but it could’ve been a bad plant to begin with as well. So I went back the store and bought another one. For a while, everything was peachy. Then, I drowned it… AGAIN! I cut down browned leaves/branches, put it in a new pot and that seemed to work. Until I realised the soil was way too soggy and the poor thing was already beyond saving. Ugh, I wanna get a new one so bad!

Succulents

Whenever I got a plant before, I always got a succulent. My mom always told me it was easiest to take care of. Unfortunately, I lost interest in them after having them for a while and just let them die… How I hear you ask? Honestly, I don’t even know! How does one kill a succulent?! I own two of them, and I’m determined to keep them alive! They’re not exactly my favorites, but they’re beautiful and I like them better combined with other types of plants. I hope to eventually propagate with them to grow ‘my own’ succulents. I’m not a very patient person, but I’m willing to try!

Plant Care; Trial & Error

I want to learn more about taking care of my plants, and I guess that starts by knowing what plants I own. I’ve had two English Ivy plants, different kinds of Orchids, succulents, and others I don’t remember the names of. I just need to water them, right..? WRONG! Did you know there are like a million things you need to consider when taking care of an Orchid? It’s the only plant I researched so far and it goes way beyond just watering it. And I was cutting some leaves my ‘unknown plant’ because woah, it’d been growing FAST. My cute pink pot was entirely covered in leaves! I wanted to give it a trim… Turns out I’m not very good at it. It’s a little uneven and you can clearly see where I’ve cut the branches. I’m pretty sure it’ll grow back, though. It’s a learning process!

Plants Make Me Happy

I’ve come to realize I have a serious plant problem; I’m obsessed! I seriously need to stop myself randomly buying new plants, hehe! I’ve been doing my very best to take care of them. I bought a vintage-looking plant sprayer/mister and bonsai sheers that I use for other plants as well. I’ve been watering them weekly and I’ve been asking my mom for help as well! She checks the soil with me and we water and fertilize them if needed. I love taking care of my plants. I genuinely enjoy watering them and I feel so accomplished and happy when I’m done. Plus it just looks amazing in my room! I’ve chosen all green plants so it goes with any color. My Orchid is the exception, of course. But it’s white so it’s neutral. I’m absolutely obsessed with it!
