Books To Get You Into Reading

Reading hasn’t always come easily for me – and it still doesn’t. I either read obsessively or not at all for weeks or even months. If I want to get back into reading, I usually know what kind of book to pick up and what to avoid. But what if you don’t know? Or what if you’re not into reading yet, but you want to get into it? You’re in luck because I’m here to help. Here are some books – in different genres – to get you (back) into reading!

Interested in a book and looking for my review? I’ve linked to all of those I’ve reviewed in the text. Some of those are on my blog, others will take you to Goodreads!

A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray

A Thousand Pieces of You is the book that got me into reading years ago. This Sci-Fi YA is EPIC, you guys! It’s easy to read, full of action, and has a fantastic romance. The cover is what initially grabbed my attention, but I love the story so much. I think I’ve read it four if not five times over the past couple of years. It has a love triangle, different dimensions, physics and so much more. A must-read, if you ask me!

Starfish by Akemi Dawn Bowman

Starfish is such an incredible own-voices contemporary novel about a Japanese-American girl who struggles with social anxiety. I don’t think I’ve related so much to a fictional character in my life. Akemi writes beautifully, and I feel like I’ve highlighted about half the book on my Kindle with relatable passages and quotable lines. It features heavy subjects such as abuse, suicide, and – obviously – social anxiety. This might not be the best book to get you into reading if these topics worry or even trigger you, but if you don’t mind; Starfish is absolutely wonderful.

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

Ah, if you know me, you know I’m OBSESSED with The Folk of Air series. Fantasy is my all-time favorite genre and just picking one “get you into reading”-book was a disaster..! Fantasy can be a bit intimidating, but there are plenty of easy to understand fantasy books out there. I went with The Cruel Prince because it’s simply one of my favorites and I feel like it’s not too difficult to understand when you’re reading fantasy for the first time. It takes place in a fantasy world, but there lots of contemporary references in this book to make it at least slightly relatable to our own modern-day world.

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

If you’re looking for a more lighthearted contemporary YA to get you into reading, Geekerella is for you! It’s a geeky retelling of Cinderella featuring fandoms, conventions, and a food truck! It’s pretty much Another Cinderalla Story in book-form. Also, if you like Audiobooks, or want to start listening to them, the Geekerella audiobook is perfect! I’ve listened to/read this book so many times and it still remains one of my all-time favorites.

More Books To Get You Into Reading…

There are so many books out there to get you into reading, I couldn’t possibly mention them all. I’m trying to read other genres besides YA Fantasy, so I’ve got quite a bunch of books from different genres to recommend. Here’s just a few;

  • A Curse So Dark & Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer (YA Fantasy)
  • Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Historical Fiction)
  • How To Be Fine by Jolenta Greenberg & Kristen Meinzer (Nonfiction – Self Help)
  • Uprooted by Naomi Novik (Adult Fantasy)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Vol. 1 by Akira Himekawa (Graphic Novel – Manga)

What book got you into reading? And what would you recommend to others?
